Meet Kayla Davis.
Q: What High School do you attend?
Please tell us a little bit about your family.
A: My family consists of my mother, father, and my younger sister. My sister is currently in 8th grade and will begin her freshman year of high school next year. My mom, Nicole Robinson, works for the National Sports Center for the Disabled and runs the therapeutic horse center in the summer and their Nordic skiing program in the winter. My father, Toby Davis, is a project manager for Rocky Mountain Catastrophe. We live on a small ranch in Granby.
What are your plans after graduation?
A: After high school, I will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida, to study Aerospace Engineering. After college, I want to work for a large space corporation on the Mars missions. Since I was very young, I was obsessed with two things: horses and space. After experimenting with several different career paths, including being a veterinarian, I concluded that engineering would be the best and most fulfilling path for me.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in Grand County, and what are your favorite meals there?
A: Recently, my favorite restaurant has been the Granby Garage. When we go to the Garage, I enjoy the pork tacos, the La Pastora burger, or the teriyaki beef. One that I have enjoyed for my whole life is Pearl Dragon. When we go there, I like to get combo fried rice or beef lo mein.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community? Why?
A: One time, when I was working at Ace Hardware as a cashier, I met an Air Force Colonel who taught at the Air Force Academy. I got her contact information, and my family and I went on a tour of the Academy with her.
Q: What was your favorite class in high school?
A: In high school, my favorite class was Astronomy. Taking that class solidified that I wanted to study space and be an engineer building hardware for space exploration.
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
A: One of my favorite movies is Hidden Figures. This movie, when I saw it at the end of my Freshman year, inspired me to start looking into space-related careers. For my TV shows, I have always been a huge Star Trek and Star Wars fan. Right now, I am re-watching Star Trek The Original Series.
Q: What is the best advice you ever received from a teacher? Who was the teacher?
A: During my Junior year, a teacher told me, “you can’t do everything.” During this time, I had spread myself so thin that I could barely pull my weight with everything that I was trying to do at the same time. The teacher was Mr. Ryan.
Q: What is your favorite memory from high school?
A: My favorite memory from high school was Junior River Trip.
Q: What is your go-to band or favorite music when you can’t decide what to listen to?
A: When I can’t decide what music to listen to, I usually lean towards my 80’s rock playlist.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
A: My mother inspires me to be better and to put my best foot forward.
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you take them for lunch?
A: I would really like to have lunch with Elon Musk. I’d like to listen to his ideas about getting humans to Mars and would be interested in his ideas about deep space travel in the future. I would take him to Charlie’s Gyros.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
A: I really enjoy how much our community cares about education and the lives of the students in the schools. The community provides students with countless opportunities, like watershed day and bug week, for the students to learn and grow outside of a classroom setting.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
A: In 5 to 10 years, I would like to be working for a large space corporation like Lockheed Martin or NASA, and I would like to either be on my way to Mars or be getting a spaceship ready to go to Mars.
Q: Who or what do you miss the most right now?
A: Right now, I miss going to school and being able to see all my peers everyday and watching as they tick down the days until the end of the year on the gumball machine.
Q: If you could go back and make one change from your school career, what would it be?
A: If I could go back and make one change in my school career, I would participate more and be at more school events.
Q: What is the first thing you want to do when this quarantine is over?
A: When the quarantine is over, I want to get together with my friends and go somewhere like Water World and go out to a nice dinner to celebrate the end of our high school careers.
