Though not the face of Granby’s Pearl Dragon that most might be familiar with, Soi Long is one of the driving forces behind the restaurant’s success. Soi moved here from California, and when she’s not hustling at the family restaurant, she enjoys gardening and hiking in her free time. Here’s my interview with her:
Q: Are you a Grand County native? If not where you from and what brought you to Grand County?
A: No, I am not. I moved here from California to be with my family.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in Grand County?
A: I’ve been living in Granby for almost 13 years.
Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career? What do you love most about what you do?
A: My family. Hiring has always been an issue. They needed help and I needed a change, so I came. What I love most about this job are the opportunities it provided. The opportunity to meet and be friends with so many wonderful people. The opportunity to improve my communication skills, operational and managing skills, etc.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in Grand County and what are your favorite meals there?
A: A hot cup of white mocha and a Mama’s Burrito smothered in green chili from Java Lava is the best way to start the day.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Grand County? And why?
A: There are too many…hmm…
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: It would be China. No doubt. I would love to see the country of my origins with my own two eyes. Build some memories. Sightseeing. Eating.
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
A: Friends. They crack me up.
Q: What advice would you give someone moving to Grand County?
A: Hmm….Slowdown! Leave the hustle and bustle behind and enjoy the peace and beauty of Grand County.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Travel to China. Travel to Japan. Travel to Italy. Buy my own home. Have my own business.
Q: What is your go-to band or favorite music when you can’t decide what to listen to?
A: No one in particular. I love the 80’s and 90’s. Kane Brown is my current favorite.
Q: What do you like to do during your free time?
A: I enjoy crafting, gardening, and hiking during my free time.
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you take them for lunch?
A: I would love to have lunch with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about Grand County?
A: What I love most about our community is the homey-small town feel and unity. I remember watching TV shows like Dawson’s Creek during my teenage years thinking how wonderful it would be to live in a small, peaceful town where everybody knows everybody and treats each other like family. Grand County definitely is just like that…filled with friendly, loving people who take care of one another.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
A: Hmm…run my small business and travel during the colder months.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: I am Lin’s sister. LOL. After a whole decade of living here, many people still ask me how am I related to Lin.
Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
A: Besides Grand County, I would say Hawaii. I love the serene mountains. Yes, I actually enjoyed my hike in Hawaii way more than my walks on the beaches. 😉
Q: If you were cast in a movie and could choose your co-star, who would it be?
A: Keanu Reeves. I absolutely love him. Besides his good looks, I love that he’s humble, hardworking, and kind-hearted.
Q: If you had a full-time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose? Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer, or Nanny?
A: I could use a Housekeeper. I am busy, don’t have much time sleeping let alone tidying up. LOL
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
A: My parents,of course. They are very hard-working people with big hearts.
Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
A: The rain and the mountain breeze.
Q: What is that one business that you would like to see in grand County that currently isn’t here.
A: I cannot tell you because it’s in my future plans. Currently not available in Grand County and hopefully, I will be the first to offer it in Grand County.
Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: Home sweet home.
